At a ceremony last night in Witherford Watson Mann’s wonderful Appleby Blue almshouse in Bermondsey we were delighted to join our clients Retirement Villages Group in receiving a Project Award for our West Malling later living development in Kent.
We’ll soon be starting on site with the project, and when complete the scheme it will provide 140 new homes on this peri-urban, ecologically rich site. A previous consent by a different architect had secured just half this number through planning appeal, but our design-led approach—which carefully responded to local context and character—was approved under delegated powers.
This is our sixth housing design award, and we’re delighted that every scheme we’ve designed in the later living sector has either been shortlisted, or won, a Housing Design Award, including our Hortsley development which secured the HAPPI award in 2019, and The Wyldewoods in Chester for Retirement Villages Group which was crowned winner of the Towards Carbon Net Zero prize in 2021.
