Staples Corner Design Code featured in Government’s Design Code Library

Brent Council is now consulting on the draft Staples Corner Growth Area Masterplan and Design Code SPD, which we’re delighted to have worked on with 5th Studio, with funding from DLUHC (the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities).

Staples Corner is the last large regeneration area in Brent Council, and plays an important role as a major commercial hub in the north east corner of the borough. It is exceptionally well located to provide logistics, employment and manufacturing uses for the entire city. Adjoining the borough boundary with Barnet, and the Brent Cross Town regeneration area to the east, the new masterplan proposes significant industrial intensification alongside the colocation of 2,000 new homes and significant improvements to the public realm. RCKa was first commissioned by Brent Council to design and run an comprehensive engagement strategy with business owners, workers and the wider community. From this we established guiding principles that informed the production of the Staples Corner Design Code, which we worked on with council officers. RCKa then worked alongside 5th Studio to develop the spatial masterplan – our focus being new residential areas to complement 5th Studio’s industrial expertise – that over the coming decade will transform Staples Corner into a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood.

We are also pleased to share that the Design Code has now been featured in the Government’s Design Code Library by the Office for Place. This library highlights area-based and site-specific guidelines and standards from across the UK. We are proud to be selected to be featured alongside a diverse range of Design Codes, each promoting inclusive and thoughtful approaches to urban planning.
